Pelvic Floor Therapy and Chiropractic: A Match Made in Heaven!

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I see many patients with pelvic floor issues.  Urinary incontinence, constipation, painful intercourse, post-partum pelvic pain, hernias, and more can all be linked to pelvic floor dysfunction.  Both men and women rely on our pelvic floors to stabilize our abdominal and pelvic organs, control urination and defecation, and support the motion of our pelvic and sacral (tailbone) joints.

Adding Pelvic Floor Therapy to your chiropractic adjustments is a one-two punch to any dysfunction in your pelvic floor.  I work with several Physical Therapists that specialize in strengthening and relaxing the muscles in your pelvic floor.

The nerves to your pelvic floor muscles tell them when to contract and relax.  If there is interference to those nerves, they will send incorrect commands to your muscles causing dysfunction.  Your chiropractic adjustments remove that interference so that your muscles are getting the right instructions.

When that interference has been present for a long time, your muscles physically lengthen and shorten based on the faulty information they’ve been getting.  Your Pelvic Floor PT works to bring your pelvic floor muscles back to their correct length.  They do this through stretching and strengthening exercises.  They also use computerized biofeedback to give you a visual of when your muscles are correctly contracted or relaxed.  This helps you and your brain learn what “normal” feels like so that your brain can start sending the right instructions to your muscles.

By combining chiropractic and Pelvic Floor Therapy, you are allowing your pelvic floor muscles to receive their instructions correctly and carry the instructions out correctly!  Magic!!  If you have any questions about your pelvic floor or how I might help you, just go to the Contact Us page and email me.
